Every winter when there’s a chance of sub-zero temperatures, there’s the possibility of snow and ice. While this makes everything look like a winter wonderland, it also makes walking very difficult and potentially dangerous. Here are some tips to help you stay safe if you want to profit from a walk in Christmas-card conditions:
1. Wear grippy shoes
Wearing shoes with slick leather or plastic soles is quite simply a bad idea. They offer little grip and dramatically increase the risk of sipping. Choose shoes, boots or overshoes with rubber or neoprene composite soles. They’re not as trendy as your normal shoes, of course, but it’s worth trading a bit of cool against a serious injury. You’ll look pretty unfashionable falling on your butt, anyway.
2. Take care with vehicles
Before you get into or out of a vehicle, pay particular attention to the surface you’re on. If you’re getting out and the surface is covered in ice, you might want to park somewhere else. At the very least, you’ll want to plant both feet firmly and use the door for support.
If you’re getting into a vehicle on a slippery surface, use it for support: place one hand on the door and the other on the back of your seat for stability as you move into position. Move carefully, preferably lowering yourself backwards onto the seat (using one or both hands on the door for support) then turning and swinging your legs into the vehicle.
