When planning the perfect camping vacation, everyone hopes that the weather is beautiful and the skies are clear. However, getting caught in a heavy downpour or extreme cold is a reality that frequent campers must deal with. While being unprepared can lead to a ruined camping experience, or even illness, the best way to protect yourself is to be prepared.
Water proof Your Tent
Getting caught in a rainstorm is something most campers eventually endure. The best way to avoid a miserable night is to prepare your equipment before you even pack the car.
Tent manufacturers typically waterproof certain parts of the tent, but most often they only waterproof the inside floor area. This is fine if you camp in perfect weather and are able to choose a site that is completely dry. However, should the clouds cover your campsite, nothing is more miserable than a wet camper.
Water proof sealants can be purchased at most outdoor stores. Make sure that you purchase one that is made especially for tents. With your tent completely dry, apply several coats to ensure you’ve covered all areas. You’ll want to waterproof both the top and bottom sides of the floor as well as12 to 18 inches above the ground on all sides. Allow the final coat to completely dry before you pack the tent and head to the great outdoors. Even sealant can mildew if not allowed to cure.
