A pleasant walk in the woods could turn into a nightmare if some unforeseen event befalls the walker. Taking basic precautions can mean the difference between life and death. Bringing a basic survival kit and being properly prepared will help to keep walkers out of serious trouble.
Every time you board a commercial aircraft, you will be encouraged to listen to the safety briefing. The briefing tells you about the safety features on board, and what you should do in an emergency. These briefings are given because there is lots of research that shows that advance preparation results in a higher survival rate should an incident occur.
If you are the type of person who likes to explore the wilderness, you should do some advance preparation that may prove vital if an accident happens. The wilderness does not necessarily mean areas that are miles away from civilization. In this context, wilderness means places that are not often frequented by people. For example, if you break a leg, you might be quite close to the nearest town. But, if you are in an area that hardly anybody passes through, you could be in serious trouble.
Before you set off into any relatively remote environment, there are several small items you should always bring in a survival pack. The following isa list of lightweight items that will easily fit into a small bag:
- A whistle is useful for attracting attention.
- A small mirror can be used to signal.
- A penknife can be useful in many situations.
- A lighter and matches in case you need to light a fire.
- A body-length, aluminum sheet can preserve heat or protect from it.
